Galp joins the wind power sector in Brazil
Galp has agreed to acquire a diversified portfolio, after maturity, of renewable energies of up to 4.8 GW which will be developed in Brazil, more than doubling its overall funnelling capacity and expanding into wind power in South America’s largest country.
The framework agreement with SER Energia covers the acquisition of projects in development with a total maximum capacity of 4.6 GWp throughout Brazil, while the agreement with Casa dos Ventos encompasses a 216MW cluster of wind farms under development in north-eastern Brazil.
According to Georgios Papadimitriou, the COO of Galp’s Renewables and New Business division, “Brazil has jump-started Galp’s growth in the last 12 years, via our main production projects in the pre-salt region. We are now adding a new driver of growth, by leveraging Brazil’s vast potential in renewable energy, and rebalancing our business in the country in line with our ambitions to transition to a cleaner energy model.”
In October Galp – currently Brazil’s third largest oil and gas producer – agreed to acquire two portfolios of solar projects under development in the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte from SER Energia, with capacities of 282 MW and 312 MW, respectively.
