Electric Summit Galp: the biggest energy initiative in Portugal

Electric Summit Galp: the biggest energy initiative in Portugal

The core aim of the Electric Summit project is to draw our attention to and explain an innovative and real experience of the best practices in energy transition and sustainable mobility, addressing various topics relating to renewable energy, innovation and technology.

The subjects of energy efficiency and independence are very much on the agendas of the world’s decision-makers, politicians, entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens. We know about the goals which the European Union set with its Green Deal and which the Portuguese government ratified to accelerate and adopt green energies which reduce greenhouse gases (GHG). In addition to this situation, we now have the war in Ukraine, which has involved pulling the plug on fossil fuels from Russia. This has prompted a broader change with knock-on effects on supply chains, inflation, lifestyle habits and energy consumption.

It is against this backdrop that sábado, Jornal de Negócios and CMTV, in partnership with Galp, are launching the Electric Summit initiative, a project which aims to help inform the Portuguese about energy transition and sustainable mobility.

The initiative has been curated by André Macedo, a former journalist specialising in economics, who will do several podcasts on the subject, and will moderate various different debates over the next few months.

All information regarding this initiative can be found at https://electricsummit.negocios.pt . Content in both Portuguese and English will be published daily over the next few months, in the form of texts, videos and podcasts, as well as the conference schedule and corresponding registration details.

Tim Marshall, Paula Abreu Marques and Philippe Vangel at the Portugal Energy Conference

On 8th June, the Teatro Thalia in Lisbon will host the first of five events dedicated to energy transition and sustainable mobility. The keynote speaker at the Portugal Energy Conference is the British journalist and geopolitical expert Tim Marshall, who will address the current context and the war’s impact on energy.

Paula Abreu Marques, the head of unit at the European Commission’s (EC) Directorate-General for Energy, will speak about the challenges of energy transition and of the European Commission’s REPowerEU plan. Lastly, Philippe Vangel, the secretary-general of the European Association for Electromobility (AVERE), will outline the state of play of electric mobility in Europe and in the world.

The morning of 8th June has been set aside for issues relating to energy transition, with an analysis of the situation in Portugal, of the need for Europe to speed up energy transition and Galp’s role in this process. The morning will be rounded off with a wide-ranging debate featuring experts on the future of energy. The afternoon will address the subject of sustainable mobility with an analysis of the electric mobility situation in Europe and in the world, and debates on the state of sustainable mobility and the lithium battery value chain.

Taking the debate further afield and closing with an international conference in Matosinhos

As well as the Portugal Energy Conference, three other events will be held in different cities around the country, to amplify the debate to reach local authorities, academia, companies and society at large. The theme of these more regionally-based initiatives will be “the future of energy”, and will look at the challenges and solutions which are being found locally to respond to energy transition.

The summit will go out with a bang, with an international event held in Matosinhos. There will be talks by the heads of international bodies, business associations, decision-makers and analysts on the two subjects highlighted at the Electric Summit.
